On Tuesday, 6 January at 3 pm, Lord Mayor Sven Schulze will welcome the carol singers in the lobby of the town hall. The 25 or so children will be accompanied by members of the Catholic parishes of St John Nepomuk, St Joseph and St Anthony as well as Annette Kanzler-Saberniak, parish priest of the Catholic parish of Holy Mother Teresa in Chemnitz.
Representatives of the media are invited to a photo opportunity.
The carol singers will recite blessing texts and songs, draw the traditional blessing 20*C+M+B+26 (Christus mansionem benedicat - Christ bless this house) over the door of the Council Chamber and ask for donations for children in need. They then visit the community centre on the Wall.
The motto of the 2026 carol singing campaign is "School instead of factory - carol singing against child labour". The country of Bangladesh will receive special support. Despite progress in the fight against child labour, around 1.8 million children and young people still have to work in this South Asian country - 1.1 million under particularly unhealthy and exploitative conditions. Sternsinger partner organisations are committed to freeing children from working conditions and enabling them to attend school.
