Lord Mayor Sven Schulze on the death of Michael Hübner
Seven-time track cycling world champion Michael Hübner died today in Chemnitz after a serious illness.
Lord Mayor Sven Schulze: "It was with great dismay that I learnt of Michael Hübner's death today. My sincere condolences go to his family and loved ones. Michael Hübner was one of the most successful German cyclists and carried the city's name into the world. He was a role model for the next generation of cyclists in our city. And even after his active career, he was committed to the sports city of Chemnitz in many ways. We will honour his memory."
Michael Hübner was born on 8 April 1959 in Karl-Marx-Stadt. He was a member of the SC Karl-Marx-Stadt sports club until the early 1990s.
Hübner won his first world championship title in 1986, followed by further titles as a professional in the keirin and sprint.
