The long-time theatre director and dedicated Chemnitz resident Hartwig Albiro died in Chemnitz on 31 December 2024 at the age of 93. Lord Mayor Sven Schulze comments on this:
"It was with great sadness and dismay that I learnt of Hartwig Albiro's death today.
With his passing, our city has lost one of the most influential figures on the cultural scene.
His decades of work as director of the theatre brought forth numerous great talents, all of whom have worked and continue to work on stages throughout Germany and beyond. Michael Gwisdek, Corinna Harfouch, Horst Krause, Andreas Schmidt-Schaller, Ulrich Mühe and Peter Kurth, among others, have all performed with him. He also played a major role in the city winning the title of European Capital of Culture.
In Hartwig Albiro, we have also lost one of the greatest campaigners for democracy and freedom. As a key figure in the peaceful revolution in Chemnitz in 1989 and a member of the Peace Day working group, he always stood up for freedom, democracy and peace.
My condolences go out to his family and friends. He will remain in our memories forever."
A book of condolences will be available at Chemnitz City Hall from Monday, 6 January, where Chemnitz residents can pay their respects.
