Lord Mayor Sven Schulze on the continuing rise in infection figures in Chemnitz
Lord Mayor Sven Schulze addressed the people of Chemnitz in a video message this morning due to the further significant increase in the number of infections. In view of the deadly danger posed by the coronavirus, he asked the population to adhere to the prescribed rules and, above all, to minimise contact:
"Dear people of Chemnitz,
The situation in the corona crisis in our city is very serious and is even getting worse.
We have to change something NOW. Last weekend alone, more than 500 people in Chemnitz tested positive for coronavirus. And the number is growing. This is a deadly danger. 34 people have died from or with corona here in Chemnitz in the past week alone. As of this morning, the RKI reports 3884 positive cases for Chemnitz, 726 more than the week before. The 7-day incidence is 294.7 - higher than ever before.
These alarming figures must finally wake us all up. It is clear that the measures and restrictions adopted so far are unfortunately not helping to drive down the infection figures. Partly because too many people are not adhering to them.
For this reason, I urge you all once again to limit your contacts to what is really necessary!
- Ask yourself: is every visit to friends and family really that important now?
- Keep your distance from your fellow human beings
- Observe the hygiene rules
- And protect yourself and others by wearing a face covering correctly - wherever you are unable to keep your distance.
We are working together with the state and hope that further measures will be taken as soon as possible to help stop the virtually uncontrolled spread of the virus.
As a city, we will also be discussing further steps locally - and will explain these in the coming days.
I would like to personally appeal to you all once again. Protect yourself as much as possible in your private and professional lives. Even beyond the prescribed rules. Otherwise we could face overcrowded hospitals and even more deaths at Christmas.
I know that the restrictions are not nice and our civil liberties are important to me. Nevertheless, we have to do something. Carrying on as before is not an option. We still have the power to decide whether we are smarter than a virus."
