Lord Mayor on the graffiti on the memorial
The city of Chemnitz condemns the graffiti in the strongest possible terms.
Mayor Barbara Ludwig: "The perpetrators should be ashamed of themselves for smearing the memorial. For years, the Chemnitz Peace Day and the commemoration at this monument have been a special way of dealing with the destruction of the city on 5 March 1945. The city was destroyed because Germany unleashed a terrible war."
The graffiti has since been removed.
