Lord Mayor informs about the implementation of the seven-point plan
Call for greater federal and state involvement in Chemnitz
Mayor Barbara Ludwig presented a further interim report on the implementation of the seven-point plan at today's city council meeting. She also called on the federal and state governments to do more for Chemnitz.
As decided by the city council, the city police service will be gradually increased from 22 to 35 employees, with the first new employees expected to start work in May. In this area, too, the number of suitable applicants will determine how quickly the 13 new employees will join the City Police team.
From September onwards, trainees from the city administration who can imagine working for the city police service will also be deployed - always on the condition that they pass the necessary recruitment and sports test. On 25 April, there will be a safety conference under the direction of Mayor Miko Runkel, to which citizens are cordially invited. The venue is Haus Kraftwerk. The people of Chemnitz will have the opportunity to talk to representatives of the police and the public order office about security and order in the city of Chemnitz and to contribute their specific opinions.
Further dialogue and participation formats planned
The Lord Mayor announced that in addition to the four residents' assemblies, which have been taking place in a new format since the beginning of the year, there will be further citizens' assemblies on specific occasions and topics in the city. The city will also continue its "Staying in dialogue" series of events, which will focus on construction sites in the city in the first half of the year and migration in the second half. Each event will take place on a Saturday. Child and grandchild care will again be organised.
Greater commitment required from the federal and state governments
Mayor Barbara Ludwig called on the federal and state governments to make a stronger commitment to Chemnitz: "A noticeable urban development that involves many Chemnitz residents and sets new accents not only in the district but also in the city centre cannot be achieved by our own efforts alone. The state and federal government are also called upon here, as they do in other cities as a matter of course and in some cases with great zeal." The development of the area behind the so-called "Parteisäge" and the surroundings of the future university library are at the centre of this. Ludwig hopes that the library can be opened by 2020 at the latest. At the same time, she expects the Free State to provide a timetable for how it will contribute to Chemnitz's urban development by investing in the city centre by 2025.
With regard to the establishment of authorities, institutions and research facilities, the
Mayor advocated that these should also be located in Chemnitz: "This will allow the federal and state governments to put their statement of wanting to support Chemnitz into practice."
The Lord Mayor also called for Chemnitz University to be able to continue
can continue to grow: "Attractive cities have growing universities. The Saxon state government must therefore create the conditions for our university to grow and, above all, be allowed to grow instead of being forced to shrink. A necessary first step is to establish a complete teacher training programme in Chemnitz in addition to the existing degree programmes."
