Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig opens the Days of Jewish Culture
Programme includes more than 60 events
The 26th Days of Jewish Culture in Chemnitz begin tomorrow, Saturday 4 March. They will be opened with the exhibition "Leben ist Glühn" by the German expressionist Fritz Ascher. The patron of the Days of Jewish Culture is Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig. In the presence of Dr Ruth Röcher, Chairwoman of the Jewish Community of Chemnitz, she will give a welcoming address at the opening in the Gunzenhauser Museum at 7.30 pm.
"The Culture Days want to bring the Jewish roots and the inspiring Jewish culture in Chemnitz to the centre, to the heart of our city. It is a great benefit for the city to be able to experience Jewish life again as part of our urban society. I am glad that Jews have found a new home in Chemnitz," said Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig.
After welcoming the guests, Dr Ingrid Mössinger, General Director of the Chemnitz Art Collections, Mayor Barbara Ludwig will give her welcoming address. Egmont Elschner, representing the organisers of the cultural festival, and the curator of the "Leben ist Glühn" exhibition, Rachel Stern, will also speak. Afterwards, the group Yankele Kapelle, which has already been a guest at the Days of Jewish Culture several times, will perform.
The exhibition provides an insight into the work of the Berlin expressionist Fritz Ascher (1893-1970). The retrospective invites visitors to rediscover the formerly ostracised and almost forgotten artist, who was persecuted by the National Socialists and whose early work was partially destroyed during the Second World War.
The organisers from the Days of Jewish Culture in Chemnitz association and the Jewish community have organised the festival for the 26th time. From 4 to 19 March, the varied programme includes more than 60 events from over 20 organisers with exhibitions, concerts, theatre, films, lectures, guided tours and school visits.
