Lord Mayor attends Shabbat service of the Jewish community
Mayor Barbara Ludwig will attend a Shabbat service in the Chemnitz synagogue this evening from 6 pm. She has accepted an invitation from the Jewish Community of Chemnitz as part of the International Week against Racism.
During a trip to Israel at the end of February, the Lord Mayor took part in the "Muni World - Smart Cities + Urban Security" conference in Tel Aviv and experienced the hospitality and warmth of the people living there. "But I also sensed the concern because anti-Semitism is spreading around the world." This is also the case in Chemnitz, where the Jewish restaurant Schalom, for example, was the target of attacks in the recent past. "Any form of anti-Semitism is an attack on our most fundamental values and beliefs," said Ludwig, who is happy about Jewish life in Germany, in Saxony and especially in Chemnitz. "I am happy about the descendants of Chemnitz Jews who come here and forgive." The Lord Mayor assures the Jews of Chemnitz of every support from the city. "We will defend you against all forms of hostility and anti-Semitism."
Every year, the people of Chemnitz celebrate the Days of Jewish Culture. This year, the series of events was opened in the Chemnitz Art Collections and was very well received by the public.
