Looted books from the Tietz family rediscovered
Lecture at the VHS on 25 September, 7 pm
On Tuesday, 25 September 2018 at 7 p.m. in the event hall of the adult education centre, 3rd floor, there will be a lecture on the surprising discovery of the Tietz family's extensive book collection. Under the title "Die Wege der geraubten Bücher", author and researcher Dr Robert Langer will report on the discovery of the once legendary Tietz private library. Admission is free.
Research into books looted by the National Socialists has recently led to the discovery of an extensive collection of books in the Bautzen City Library that originally belonged to the Jewish entrepreneurial couple Edith and Georg Tietz. Georg Tietz, owner of the Hermann Tietz department stores (HERTIE), saved himself and his family after the "Aryanisation" by going into exile in the USA, where descendants still live today. The lecture will also deal with the question of how it is possible that Nazi looted property can still be found in public institutions, such as libraries, and what circumstances led to such collections remaining undiscovered or traces being covered up.
This event is a co-operation between Weiterdenken - Heinrich Böll Foundation Saxony and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.
