London 2012: David Storl from Chemnitz wins silver in his Olympic debut
David Storl from LAC Erdgas Chemnitz won the silver medal in the shot put at the Olympic Games in London this evening. With 21.86 metres, he was only narrowly beaten by Olympic champion Tomasz Majewski, securing second place at the age of just 22. Despite his young age, Storl is currently the reigning European champion, world champion and Olympic silver medallist.
Mayor Barbara Ludwig: "My warmest congratulations. You can only bow down to this achievement: silver at the Olympic Games at the age of 22. Not only did he leave all but one of the best shot-putters in the world in his wake. He also overcame perhaps the most difficult opponent, the high expectations following his World Championship and European Championship titles, with a personal best. And he did so with an aplomb that is impressive in front of an audience of millions. I firmly believe that he will inspire us many more times in the coming years and I am sure that the people of Chemnitz will give him a rousing reception when we welcome him back home."
David Storl thus secured the first precious metal for the German track and field athletes.
