On Saturday, 14 June at 2 pm, Mayor Michael Stötzer will open the Lohse-Uhlig-Steig circular hiking trail at the Kleinolbersdorf leisure park, Ferdinandstraße 165, and ceremoniously hand it over to the people of Chemnitz.
The Lohse-Uhlig-Steig - one of 30 intervention areas of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 - was chosen as a joint project by the citizens of Kleinolbersdorf-Altenhain. With a length of around ten kilometres, a themed circular hiking trail has been created that leads through the beautiful surroundings of Kleinolbersdorf-Altenhain. The aim was to combine nature, history and community and to offer local people and visitors a platform for exercise, recreation and education. It is not only intended to encourage exercise and recreation, but also to promote identification with the local area.
The circular hiking trail, a so-called public square, leads visitors past ten stations that offer informative insights into the surrounding area, local history and the industrial and natural landscapes. At each station, visitors can discover exciting details and learn more about the development of the region.
An important station on the trail is the leisure centre in the heart of Kleinolbersdorf. A wide range of options are available here: Whether it's ball games such as basketball, volleyball or floorball - the square is ideally equipped for sporting activities. A new hiker's hut has been built right next to it, at the entrance to the forest. In addition, a weather mushroom with seating and information boards along the path on Äppelallee invite visitors to linger and relax.
The work was carried out by ibb Ingenieurbüro Bauwesen GmbH, architect Corina Krug, Altenhainer Baugesellschaft mbH, Metallbau Pohlers GmbH & Co KG and Krause & Co Hoch-, Tief- und Anlagenbau.
Background
The public squares are the result of intensive participation by people in the city's neighbourhoods and localities. The stakeholders from the city's neighbourhoods have put a lot of thought into the project and, together with their citizens, have selected a public space to be redesigned as part of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. Each of the eight areas of the citizens' platforms and each of the eight incorporated localities received 325,000 euros.
The public squares are among the 30 intervention areas of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. They are the city of Chemnitz's urban development project for the Capital of Culture, which now involves an investment of around 60 million euros.
