Local action plan for democracy is being updated
The Local Action Plan for Democracy, Tolerance and a Cosmopolitan Chemnitz is being updated and continued with yesterday's information to the City Council. Over the past two years, the administration and stakeholders have identified the new need for action to promote democracy through workshops, networking meetings and democracy conferences. The situation analysis has also been revised, in particular taking into account the events in August.
In 2008, the city council adopted the framework concept for the local action plan for tolerance and democracy, against violence, right-wing extremism and xenophobia. Since then, the content has been repeatedly adapted to current needs. The refugee movements from countries affected by war and poverty, which have led and continue to lead to fundamental social debates, are the basis for the current adjustments.
The extent to which anti-democratic movements are gaining support among the population has increased. The degree of mobilisation and the event formats in which inhuman and racist attitudes are openly communicated have increased. Local festivals, concerts, memorial events and peace marches are increasingly being misused and infiltrated. The aim is to make right-wing populist, inhumane and radical ideologies acceptable. Many citizens are finding it increasingly difficult to see through these strategies.
For this reason, the first update from 2012 was completely revised and new fields of action were defined. These include, for example, promoting existing cooperation and networking formats more actively, analysing the background and support systems of the NSU more sustainably, expanding services that deal with the role of the media in society and strengthening information services that discuss the origins of political decisions and show how the population can participate and make decisions.
