Living together in a multicultural society: Respect, dialogue, interaction
European Week of Local Democracy 2015
With readings and an instrument-making workshop, Chemnitz associations and initiatives are drawing attention to the indispensability of respectful coexistence in multicultural societies during the European Week of Local Democracy 2015 from 12 to 18 October.
In Chemnitz, author Eva Ruth Wemme will open the campaign week with a reading. For her book "Meine 7000 Nachbarn", the author conducted interviews with Romanian migrants and reports on their lives, their difficult experiences with unemployment and homelessness and common prejudices.
The reading will take place on Monday, 12 October at 7 pm in the Odradek reading café, Leipziger Straße 3.
The topic of "poverty migration" will be the focus of a reading on Wednesday, 14 October at 8 pm in the Odradek reading café. On this evening, Chris Münster will read from the novel "Slaughter the poor!" by Shumona Sinha. Ricardo Frühstück will accompany the reading with sounds and music.
At both events in the Lesecafé Odradek, traditional cuisine from different cultures will be experimented with. The aim of eating together is to create an open atmosphere for dialogue and discussion and to promote community.
For the European Week of Local Democracy, Subbotnik e. V. is offering the workshop "Dual Instrument Making" on Saturday and Sunday, 17 and 18 October. During the two-day workshop, participants will learn how to build acoustic instruments from wood and electronic instruments by soldering and connecting electrical devices. At the end of the workshop on 18 October at 6 pm, the participants will give an improvisation concert on their newly built instruments in the Waldorf School gym. Participation in the workshop is still possible. No previous knowledge of craftsmanship or music is necessary. There are no costs for participation.

Background
The annual European Week of Local Democracy is coordinated by the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe. Each October, the Congress invites the municipalities and regions of the 47 member states of the Council of Europe and their partners to organise events and activities to draw citizens' attention to the importance of local democracy and to motivate them to get involved in democratic processes. The European Week of Local Democracy was first organised in 2007. This year is the fourth time that the city of Chemnitz has taken part in the action week with a programme.
