Concert and talk on the exhibition "From Chemnitz. A piano" on 16 November, 6 pm, Auditorium, Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz am Theaterplatz
On Thursday, 16 November at 6 pm, musicians Nirit and Lili Sommerfeld will be giving a concert in the auditorium of the Kunstsammlungen am Theaterplatz to accompany the exhibition "From Chemnitz. A Piano" and would like to do more than just talk to visitors.
Admission is free of charge.
Between the art collections and the "Parteisäge" is a plot of land with the parcel number 783, where the Jewish textile merchant Julius Sommerfeld once lived and worked amidst many other houses (formerly Antonplatz 15). He was deported to Sachsenhausen concentration camp by the National Socialists in 1940 and murdered there. The house on Antonplatz became a Jewish old people's home and eventually a collection centre for deportations. Damaged during the war, the building was demolished in 1948. Today, a stumbling block commemorates the fate of the owner.
Julius Sommerfeld was able to enable his son Rolf Siegfried to flee to Palestine. He found him a room with a piano there and paid the rent for a year in advance.
More than 80 years later, Julius Sommerfeld's granddaughter and great-granddaughter, the musicians Nirit and Lili Sommerfeld, are now coming to Chemnitz to tell the story of the family and the house.
A piano will become the centrepiece of an evening of music and conversation in the auditorium of the Kunstsammlungen am Theaterplatz. Nirit and Lili Sommerfeld would like to revitalise the property and its surroundings in the near future together with Chemnitz residents, close the circle and dare to make a new start.
