Lights out for Earth Hour on 25 March
Chemnitz takes part in the world's largest climate protection campaign organised by the WWF
Next Saturday, 25 March, from 8.30 pm, the lights on the city's most famous head - the Karl Marx Monument - will once again be switched off for one hour in Chemnitz to set an example for environmental and climate protection. The utility company eins and its network operator inetz are supporting this campaign.
On this day, the lights will be switched off around the world from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm. During WWF Earth Hour, thousands of cities will be symbolically shrouding their most famous buildings in darkness, including landmarks such as Big Ben in London and the statue of Christ in Rio de Janeiro, but countless private individuals will also be switching off the lights at home.
According to the WWF, millions of people around the world will be taking part again this year. Anyone who would like to take part can find news about the event as well as tips for their own Earth Hour at www.wwf.de/earthhour/. In Germany, the motto of this year's campaign is "Climate protection works together". The environmentalists want to draw attention to the fact that everyone can and must do their bit to protect the climate.
Earth Hour
WWF Earth Hour is taking place for the eleventh time this year. The campaign began in Sydney in 2007. In the years that followed, it spread around the world. Earth Hour is now celebrated on all continents in over 170 countries. Around 7,000 cities worldwide take part, 241 in Germany alone last year.
