LESELUST - Turning reading into an experience
6th Chemnitz Literature Days from 2 to 27 April 2016
From 2 to 27 April 2016, the City of Chemnitz's cultural department is organising the 6th Chemnitz Literature Days LESELUST. The programme ranges from readings, lectures, writing workshops and plays to the Chemnitz Reading Night on 23 April 2016. 27 partners, who are organising and financing the reading spectacle under the leadership of Chemnitz City Library, are making this possible. The Chemnitz Literature Days are sponsored by the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony and the City of Chemnitz.
Experiencing literature live and facilitating encounters with authors are the aims of LESELUST. Since 2006, the Chemnitz Literature Days have been held every two years around the UNESCO World Book Day on 23 April.
This year, 23 April is also the 400th anniversary of the death of the Spanish national poet Miguel de Cervantes. In his honour, the puppet theatre and the TIETZ are reviving his classic of world literature "Don Quixote" with an event on 17 April 2016 and programme items for the reading night on 23 April 2016.
Germany's long-serving TV detective Andreas Schmidt-Schaller will kick off the 6th Chemnitz Literature Days on 2 April 2016 at the TIETZ with his book "Klare Ansage". Back in the 1980s, he appeared as Lieutenant Grawe in "Polizeiruf 110" and since 2001 in the role of Inspector Hajo Trautzschke in "SOKO Leipzig". The well-known actor celebrated his first successes at the Karl-Marx-Stadt theatre in the 1970s. On his 70th birthday last year, the actor wrote his autobiography.
Two events organised by the adult education centre address the current social debate on war, flight and migration. Wolfgang Grenz, the former Secretary General of Amnesty International Germany, will read from his book "Shipwreck" on 5 April 2016. In it, he reports on the failure of European refugee policy. The Director of the Institute of Sociology at the Freiburg University of Education, Prof. Dr Albert Scherr, calls for a discussion on the topic in his lecture "Immigration in Germany - Together instead of against each other" on 21 April 2016.
Two readings at the city library on 6 April 2016 with Feridun Zaimoglu and on 20 April 2016 with Linda Zervakis describe the topic of migration from different perspectives. Feridun Zaimoglu's latest novel "Siebentürmeviertel" takes its readers to Istanbul in the 1930s and into the centre of a strange and fascinating world in which a German boy has to assert himself. In the book "Queen of the Colourful Bag - Stories from the Kiosk", newsreader Linda Zervakis tells her very personal story as the child of Greek migrant workers.
The dramaturge and writer John von Düffel will be a guest at the Neue Sächsische Galerie on 8 April 2016. In "KL - Gespräch über die Unsterblichkeit", he conducts a fictional interview with the well-known fashion designer KL about being and appearing and the fear of disappearing.
At a matinee on 9 April 2016, friends and companions will remember the Chemnitz journalist and publicist Addi Jacobi in spoken and visual contributions. His long-time friend, film composer Peter Gotthardt, will provide the musical backdrop.
Following her bestseller "Ab jetzt ist Ruhe", radio journalist Marion Brasch presents a wonderfully absurd novel, "Die irrtümlichen Abenteuer des Herrn Godot", from which she will read at Club Atomino on 11 April 2016.
Christoph Hein, winner of the Stefan Heym Prize of the City of Chemnitz, will be presenting his new major novel about Germany, "Glückskind mit Vater", at Villa Esche on 13 April 2016. Ironic and humorous, touching, without sentimentality or sarcasm, Christoph Hein tells the story of an unprecedented and exemplary life in more than sixty years of German conditions.
There will be a musical reading of "Die große weite Welt der Mimi Balu" with Leipzig author Kati Naumann at the TIETZ on 14 April 2016. The Mimi Balu Trio will provide a musical accompaniment to the heroine's journey from Limbach-Oberfrohna to London with a mixture of BritPop and German hits from the 1960s.
Under the title "Abspann zur Freiheit des Westens", the two Chemnitz writers Hans Brinkmann and Rainer Klis will read current texts critical of the times at the TIETZ on 15 April 2016.
"Children's literature with a difference" is the motto on 16 April 2016 at the TIETZ. In two performances, puppeteers Frank Schenke and Rosi Lampe will stage well-known children's book classics "Die Regentrude" and "Das Rübchen" with theatrical means for the whole family.
The author Angela Krauß writes lyrical memories of her childhood in Chemnitz in her poetry collection "Eine Wiege". The reading will take place on 21 April 2016 at Villa Esche.
On 23 April 2016, the Technical University, the Student Union and the city's cultural services are inviting you to the third Chemnitz Reading Night with a book and antiquarian book market as well as numerous readings and hands-on activities.
A reading with images and sounds from Madagascar can be experienced at the Museum of Natural History on 24 April 2016. Freiburg biologist Bernd Jürgen Seitz will present his book "Armin: (R)Evolution auf Madagaskar".
Clemens Meyer and Claudius Nießen will conclude the Literature Days with a reading show entitled "Zwei Himmelhunde - Irre Filme, die man besser liest" on 27 April 2016 at the TIETZ.
