On Monday, 14 April at 4 pm, Mayor Michael Stötzer and the Grüna local council will ceremonially hand over the leisure area on Bergstraße to the citizens of Chemnitz.
Afterwards, at around 4.45 pm, an approximately one-hour guided hike will start from the intervention area to the panorama board of the new Capital of Culture hiking trail "Grüna erleben". Mayor Michael Stötzer and representatives of the Grüna Heimatverein e. V. and the Grüna Natur- und Wanderverein e. V. will be there.
The open space was selected for the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 as an intervention area for the village of Grüna in order to open it up to new uses. In addition to the "Grüna erleben" (Experience Grüna) circular trail on the history of the village, a multifunctional square has been created with a stage, recreational areas for all age groups and a pond terrace that can be reached via a footbridge. A new place to meet, socialise, experience and enjoy.
325,000 euros from the Capital of Culture budget were available for the design of the public square. The planning services were provided by Jacob+Bilz Landschaftsarchitekten PartnerschaftsG mbH. The construction work was carried out by Baumschule Hohenstein-Ernstthal Garten-und Landschaftsbau GmbH.
Background:
The public squares are the result of intensive participation by the people in the neighbourhoods and localities. The stakeholders from the city's neighbourhoods put a lot of thought into the project and, together with their citizens, selected a public space to be redesigned as part of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. Each of the eight areas of the citizens' platforms and each of the eight incorporated localities received a maximum of 325,000 euros. For example, a rest area on the Chemnitz Valley cycle path, a themed circular hiking trail around the village of Kleinolbersdorf-Altenhain and a new reception pavilion in Küchwald were realised.
The public squares are among the 30 intervention areas of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. They are the city of Chemnitz's urban development project for the Capital of Culture, which now involves an investment of over 60 million euros.
