Leipziger Straße/Matthesstraße traffic lights go into operation
The new Leipziger Straße/Matthesstraße traffic lights will go into operation tomorrow. This will enable cyclists and pedestrians to cross Leipziger Straße safely.
The Leipziger Straße/Matthesstraße junction was reported to the City of Chemnitz Accident Commission by the Chemnitz Police Department in 2010 as an accident black spot. As part of an accident analysis, the accident occurrence was examined in depth in order to identify the factors in the traffic system that favour accidents. As a result, the accident commission decided to guide the many cyclists and pedestrians crossing the road safely across Leipziger Straße by means of a traffic light system with demand signals. In 2015, the funds for construction were made available in the municipal budget.
The Schloßteichstraße/Matthesstraße road is a busy route for cycle traffic according to the city of Chemnitz's cycle traffic concept and is very well received by cyclists. This is due in particular to the fact that it is foreseeable that it will not be possible to provide a safe route along the parallel Hartmannstraße/Limbacher Straße.
The traffic lights are integrated into the coordination of the Leipziger Straße traffic lights, and pedestrians and cyclists crossing the road have to request a signal for clearance via a button on the traffic light pole. The connections for cycle traffic in Matthesstraße have been adapted on both sides of Leipziger Straße to enable safe and convenient guidance.
The construction costs for this measure totalled 154,000 euros.
