Lecture on the occasion of the "100 years of TIETZ" anniversary
The next event in the lecture series "The City Archive invites you" will take place on Thursday, 19 September, 6 pm, at Chemnitz Youth Hostel "eins", Getreidemarkt 1, 09111 Chemnitz. The lecture is organised in cooperation between the City Archive and the Chemnitz History Society. Admission is free.
The speaker on the topic of "100 years of TIETZ" is Chemnitz historian and journalist Dr Jürgen Nitsche. He will mark the 100th anniversary of the opening of what was once the most elegant department stores' in Saxony on 23 October 1913 with a lecture on the eventful history of the striking building, which was designed by the well-known architect Wilhelm Kreis.
During the fascist era, the Tietz company was expropriated by the Nazis and the managing director Hermann Fürstenheim was murdered in the pogrom night of 9 November 1938. After 1945, a new beginning was briefly made with the "Erzgebirgisches Warenhaus" (ERWA). After reconstruction in 1963, the building was part of the Centrum department stores in the GDR, and after reunification it became part of the Kaufhof chain. Since 2004, the building complex has been home to DAStietz, a cultural department stores' run by the city of Chemnitz, which houses various cultural institutions: Museum of Natural History, Chemnitz City Library, Chemnitz Adult Education Centre and the Neue Sächsische Galerie.
