Lecture on the "Age of Faith. The rise and fall of our familiar form of religion"

The adult education centre invites you to an online lecture on Thursday, 10 December, from 7.30 to 9 p.m. entitled "The age of faith. The rise and fall of our familiar form of religion". The well-known cultural scientist Prof Jan Assman will shed light on the transformation of faith and religion over the centuries.

The "age of faith" began with the emancipation of religion from the state around 500 BC in early Judaism. It began to fade with the emancipation of the state from religion in the 18th and 19th centuries. The lecture deals with this history from the point of view of Egyptology, which has to do with a culture that preceded the age of faith and whose rediscovery since the Renaissance has contributed to the end of this age.
The speaker, Jan Assmann, is Professor Emeritus of Egyptology at the University of Heidelberg and Professor of General Cultural Studies at the University of Constance. He has been honoured with the German Historians' Prize (1998), the Sigmund Freud Prize for Scientific Prose (2016) and the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade (with Aleida Assmann, 2018), among others.
