The new beginning of musical life after 1945
The next event in the series "The City Archive invites you" will take place on Wednesday, 13 March 2013 at 6 p.m. in the City Archive building, Aue 16, 09112 Chemnitz.
The well-known Chemnitz musicologist Prof Dr Werner Kaden will speak on the topic "We want to learn to sing again" - The new beginning of musical life after 1945.
Based on the state of musical life in Chemnitz before 1945, the initiators of the new musical beginning in 1945, including the Antifa Youth, will be presented. The new beginning was marked by the resumption of concert and theatre activities. Works by composers who had been ostracised and banned during the Nazi era were performed again alongside pieces that had not yet been performed. The choral movement, in which church choirs also played a large part, played a major role. New forms of dance music, particularly American, also contributed to musical life.
The motto of the recital is a line of text from a poem by Johannes R. Becher, which was set to music by the Chemnitz composer Paul Kurzbach. The melody is played several times a day as part of the carillon from the tower of the Old Town Hall. There it symbolises the woman in ruins and thus also a "new beginning".
