Lecture: From Escher to NILES-SIMMONS - The history of a Chemnitz machine tool manufacturer
The next event in the series "The City Archive presents" will take place on Wednesday, 15 April 2015 at 6 p.m. in the City Archive building, Aue 16, 09112 Chemnitz. Under the title "From Escher to NILES-SIMMONS", Dr Klaus Müller, Head of the Regional Industrial History Working Group in the Friends of the Industrial Museum, will give a talk on the history of the Chemnitz machine tool manufacturer. Admission is free.
The lecture deals with the 140-year history of a Chemnitz-based company that produced machine tools without interruption over this long period. This was not a straightforward process. Rather, it was characterised by a number of profound breaks, by constant economic fluctuations, by crisis and war, and by renewed upswing. Under different owners, the company passed through various social systems: from the German Empire to the Weimar Republic, the period of Hitler's dictatorship, its existence as a state-owned enterprise in the GDR and today's free market economy. However, the production profile remained the same for 140 years: the construction of machine tools.
