Lecture evening on the history of nature conservation
As part of the monthly events programme of the voluntary nature conservation service, there will be a lecture evening on Tuesday, 28 October at 5 pm at the nature conservation station at Adelsbergstraße 192. The topic this time is part 2 of the lecture series on the history of nature conservation in our city. The speaker is Ulrich Schuster, long-time director of the Chemnitz School Biology Centre/Botanical Garden.
The topic of the lecture is environmental education and nature conservation in work with children and young people in the GDR. From 1976 to 1989, Ulrich Schuster worked as a teacher at the Young Naturalists' Centre in Karl-Marx-Stadt. Many children and young people became interested in the topic of environmental and nature conservation through practical working group lessons, interesting excursions to nature reserves between the Jena shell limestone area and the Ore Mountains, specialist camps in outstanding nature reserves during the school holidays and also through meadow mowing camps in the Ore Mountains. These groups gave rise to the first nature conservation youth group within the Kulturbund Karl-Marx-Stadt, whose commitment to nature also brought the young people into conflict with the authorities. Last but not least, the young conservationists also took part in the New Forum demonstration in October 1989.
