Lecture evening in the city archive: About the painter Georg Gelbke
The first event in this year's lecture series "The City Archive Presents" is being held on Wednesday, 21 January at 6 p.m. in the City Archive building, Aue 16, 09112 Chemnitz, and will be given by art historian Dr Kai Artinger from the Chemnitz Art Collections. He will be speaking on the subject of "Bound Death and Dead Gladiator: The Horror Paintings of Georg Gelbke. A member of the Chemnitz artists' group draws the First World War."
Admission to the lecture is free.
The city archive provides information on the lecture: Georg Gelbke (1882-1947) was one of the first German artists to critically depict the First World War. To mark the centenary of the start of the war last year, the speaker will examine Gelbke's two graphic war cycles. He places them in their historical and biographical context and shows the pictorial sources from which the artist, who was never a soldier himself, drew. The search for clues leads to the depiction of gladiators from ancient times.
