Lecture at the environmental centre
Topic: "Pesticides, the unrecognised danger", 27 January, 7 p.m.
Next Wednesday, 27 January at 7 pm, Tomas Brückmann will be giving a lecture entitled "Pesticides, the misunderstood danger" at the Chemnitz Environmental Centre, Henriettenstarße 5. The speaker works for the federal organisation BUND (Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland) and is responsible for pesticides and biodiversity. In addition to describing the problems associated with the use of pesticides in various areas of application, alternative methods of weed control will be presented.
Background: Germany's agricultural landscape is experiencing a serious decline in species. Even a bird like the skylark can no longer find anything to eat in many of our fields. The high use of pesticides is to blame.
Glyphosate is the most widely used active ingredient in broad-spectrum herbicides worldwide. Following warnings from scientists, the WHO even classified this pesticide in the second-highest cancer warning category "probably carcinogenic to humans" in 2015.
However, this weedkiller is sprayed in municipalities, allotment gardens and in agriculture. As a result, this water pollutant also finds its way into surface waters and sewage treatment plants. Bans on its use are being examined at EU and federal level. Some federal states are already banning the use of glyphosate in local authorities. Nationwide, around 12 municipalities have banned the use of pesticides. The Chemnitz City Council also instructed the city administration to exhaust all possibilities to restrict the use of glyphosate in the city.
