Language connects - European Neighbourhood Festival
Music, readings and hands-on activities on 12 May at the Rosenhof
At the end of Europe Week, Chemnitz is celebrating a colourful festival of neighbours at the Rosenhof. On 12 May 2017, the EU Office of the City of Chemnitz and the Chemnitz City Citizens' Initiative, together with numerous partners, are organising a programme with musical performances, readings and hands-on activities.
Between 2 and 6 p.m., children from the Gebrüder Grimm primary school's after-school care centre will perform songs in various languages, pupils from the municipal music school will play klezmer music and the sign language choir "Monael & Friends" will perform. The motto "Language connects" is thus reflected in a variety of ways.
On the reading island in the former shop at Rosenhof 23, Radek Friedrich from the Czech Republic will read poems based on Vogelsingen. Folk art by Polish guests can also be seen here, including graphics, paintings and handmade Jawa puppets.
Neighbours from Chemnitz can chat over a cup of coffee and a slice of cake, exchange ideas and make new contacts.
There is a European flavour at the stands: English biscuits and tea, French comics for the little ones to colour in, culinary specialities from Łódź, Hungarian puzzles and recipes to pick as well as a quiz on the EU languages. Visitors can also get creative with textile techniques or painting on film and sand.
You can also play: with 100 board games plus tactile pachisi, memory for the ears, Braille puzzles etc. for blind and visually impaired people. Children learn to write their names in Hebrew or Braille for the blind.
The concluding event "Literature of our neighbours - Polish writers presented" at 6 pm in the Chemnitz City Library will introduce guests from Łódź and Lwówek Śląski to the works of the Łódź poet Julian Tuwim and Cyprian Kamil Norwids. (See also press release no. 275)
