KOSMOS Chemnitz will take place on 8 June 2024

CWE and Kulturhauptstadt GmbH organise festival with civil society players

KOSMOS Chemnitz will take place next year on 8 June. This was announced today by Lord Mayor Sven Schulze.

The festival for democracy, society, music and culture will take place throughout Chemnitz city centre up to Brühl and is expected to attract around 50,000 visitors.

KOSMOS is being organised by the CWE in collaboration with many social stakeholders and the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 GmbH.

A core team of employees from these groups will take over the organisation and at the same time involve many other initiatives and groups that want to get involved.

The results of this year's KOSMOS conference will also be incorporated into next year's KOSMOS. At the same time, preparations are also beginning for a KOSMOS EUROPE in 2025, the year in which Chemnitz will be the European Capital of Culture.

The organisers will be announcing further details and specifics at several events over the coming weeks and months.

KOSMOS - the idea behind it

The political upheavals of recent decades and the associated rapid social and economic change have demanded a great deal from people and have led to large sections of the population resigning themselves to public discourse.

These people need to be brought back, especially in times when populist movements with their seemingly simple solutions are gaining influence.

The task now is to stabilise the debate about democratic values so that the open society has a future.

The prerequisite for tackling necessary and positive changes already lies dormant in the citizens. After all, how have they mastered the eventful history of their city if not with ingenuity, a talent for improvisation, passion, imagination and self-efficacy? Breaking with habits is the central leitmotif of KOSMOS: panels in a bus stop, basketball at a crossroads, bands in retail outlets, readings in launderettes, etc. The KOSMOS team provides the platform and the infrastructure. People from Chemnitz and Europe shape the content.
