Background:
As early as the 1980s, Carl H. Hahn pushed for the start of VW engine production in what was then Karl-Marx-Stadt. After reunification, he was particularly keen to strengthen the industrial sites of his old home town and make a fresh start at the old automotive industry production sites in Zwickau and Chemnitz.

The construction of the new VW engine plant, today one of the most modern engine plants in the world, is thanks to his commitment. He is also responsible for the start of Polo production in Mosel/Zwickau in May 1990 and the construction of the new plant there. The initial impetus provided by these investments led to exceptional economic growth in Saxony, creating more than 40,000 jobs at VW and in the supplier industry.

In recognition of his services to Chemnitz and the automotive industry in Saxony, Carl H. Hahn was made an honorary citizen of the city of Chemnitz on 9 June 1994. He would have been 100 years old on 1 July 2026.
