Kick-off to Europe Week 2018
"Hungarian Traces in Chemnitz" Exhibition opening on Wednesday, 2 May, 6 pm in the town hall
In cooperation with the Hungarian Cultural Association Chemnitz und Umgebung e. V. and the Chemnitz Migration Officer, the European Office of the City of Chemnitz invites you to the opening of the exhibition "Hungarian Traces in Chemnitz" next Wednesday, 2 May 2018, at 6 pm in the exhibition room of the town hall. This also marks the start of Europe Week in Chemnitz. The exhibition - supported by cultural funding from the City of Chemnitz Cultural Area - will then be on display until 25 May 2018.
The history of immigration to Chemnitz is not a new story. Using the example of immigrant Hungarians, the exhibition shows that migration has been a part of the city's history from the very beginning. Immigration from European countries such as France, Norway, Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary in particular contributed greatly to the development of the Chemnitz region. The exhibition's roll-ups depict well-known and lesser-known personalities with Hungarian roots from the past and present.
Background to Europe Week:
On 9 May 1950, French Foreign Minister Robert Schumann paved the way for today's European Union with his speech on the proposal for a production community for coal and steel. Every year, the EU commemorates this historic moment with its Europe Day. In Germany, a "Europe Week" has been organised around Europe Day for years. Chemnitz also regularly takes part in this series of events with its own programme.
