On Saturday, 20 September at 12 noon, Mayor Dagmar Ruscheinsky will open the Intercultural Weeks 2025 in Chemnitz with the Festival of Cultures on the market square. The two-week series of events under the patronage of Lord Mayor Sven Schulze will be held under the motto "Heimat im Herzen - Vielfalt in Chemnitz". The opening festival is also part of the "haamit heimaten" festival, which is being organised by the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 from 18 to 21 September.
Etelka Kobuß, Migration Officer of the City of Chemnitz and the main organiser of the event series: "We are celebrating coexistence and togetherness in our city in order to make people with a history of immigration and integration work visible. With this event, we also want to give everyone the chance to get first-hand information and seek dialogue with those who are closely involved in the topic of immigration. Encounters and dialogue are essential for respectful and unprejudiced interaction."
With more than 70 information stands and several hundred participants, the Festival of Cultures offers numerous opportunities for encounters and dialogue from 10 am to 8 pm.

50 years ago, in 1975, the German Bishops' Conference, the Protestant Church in Germany and the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Germany initiated the Intercultural Week. Chemnitz has also been taking part in the series of events since 1991 and has been organising its own events ever since.
The Intercultural Weeks in Chemnitz are prepared and carried out by the City of Chemnitz Migration Officer in close cooperation with the Migration Advisory Council, the Social Welfare Office, the AGIUA e. V. Migration Social and Youth Work Association, the Lila Villa Women's Centre in the akCente e. V. Association and with the support of numerous Chemnitz associations and initiatives.
The event is financed by tax funds on the basis of the budget adopted by the Saxon state parliament (Directive on Integrative Measures, SAB), by grants from the Local Action Plan for Democracy, Tolerance and for a Cosmopolitan Chemnitz, by funds from the federal programme "Live Democracy!", by grants in accordance with the City of Chemnitz directive on the granting of grants in the field of art and culture as well as by sponsorship from eins energie in Sachsen and numerous donations.
