Karl-Marx-Stadt 1989 - Chemnitz 1990. Memories of the time of reunification
Discussion with contemporary witnesses on 23 November, 6 p.m., in St. John's Church
As part of the series "875 years of history in twelve months", interested parties are invited to a discussion with contemporary witnesses entitled "Karl-Marx-Stadt 1989 - Chemnitz 1990. Memories of the time of change" on Friday, 23 November 2018 at 6 p.m. in the Johanniskirche, Am Park der Opfer des Faschismus. Admission is free.
The long-standing Karl-Marx-Stadt/Chemnitz theatre director Hartwig Albiro will moderate the discussion. The dialogue partners are Ingo Andratschke, Andreas Bochmann and Pastor Stephan Brenner. Both the moderator and the panellists were protagonists of the fall of communism in Karl-Marx-Stadt at various points, as theatre directors, pastors and in the civil and environmental movement. As contemporary witnesses, they are also representative of many like-minded people who helped bring about the change in Karl-Marx-Stadt. They talk about their goals and ideas at the time, reflect on the results of the Peaceful Revolution in the GDR and its impact on their personal and professional lives. At the same time, they take a look at today's developments in the light of the historical events.
In the 1980s, St John's Church was a place where a critical examination of the developments in the former GDR took place in a variety of ways. In this respect, it also symbolises the period of change. The event is being organised in cooperation with the Evangelical Lutheran St. Jakobi Johannis parish.
The event series "875 years of history in twelve months" is a joint project of the Chemnitz History Society, the Chemnitz Saxon Industrial Museum, the Schloßberg Museum, the State Museum of Archaeology and the Chemnitz City Archives. Supported by the CWE.
