Kappelbach green corridor receives award
The "Kappelbach green corridor" project has been honoured with the DWA (Deutsche Vereinigung der Wasserwirtschaft, Abwasser und Abfall e.V.) water development award. Mayor Petra Wesseler will be presented with the award, which is only presented every three years, on Wednesday 21 August by the Vice President of the DWA, Eberhard Jüngel.
Citizens and representatives of the media are cordially invited to attend the award ceremony on Wednesday, 21 August 2013, 10 a.m., at Kappelbach. The meeting point is the corner of Ulmenstraße and Zwickauer Straße.
The DWA commendation was awarded to the City of Chemnitz for the project to develop the "Kappelbach green corridor". Due to its former industrial use, the bank area was completely engineered and enclosed by a bank wall up to 3.5 metres high. As a result, this area was also an obstacle to effective flood protection. Furthermore, the area as a whole was in a poor ecological condition and had no quality of amenity.
The development of the "Kappelbach green corridor" was intended to improve the ecological situation on site and at the same time support flood protection in this area. In addition, an attractive inner-city green space was to be created for local residents, which would also be well connected to the city's network of paths.
Specifically, the bank wall was demolished and the paved bank was ecologically upgraded overall, e.g. by planting various shrubs and perennials and adding stones. Furthermore, the green corridor now has an additional park path with benches. The improved flood protection in this area has already proved its worth during the summer floods this year.
