Kappelbach cycle path under Gaußstraße bridge must be closed

Due to the progressive damage to the Gaußstraße bridge over the Kappelbach cycle path, particularly on the underside of the structure, road safety can no longer be guaranteed. It is therefore necessary to close the cycle path underneath in both directions to all traffic, including pedestrians, probably from the middle of the 40th calendar week.

The underside of the concrete superstructure with built-in steel girders is characterised by such severe damage that there is a risk of large areas of concrete coming loose in an uncontrolled manner and falling onto the cycle path or causing serious hazards due to the low clearance height. In the past, smaller parts had to be removed again and again in a controlled manner in order to rule out potential hazards.

The situation that has arisen has become apparent. As early as November 2007, cycle traffic was restricted by installing barriers to reduce the danger for cyclists. The clearance height is only 1.90 metres, signposted as

1.80 metres. There were repeated complaints about the condition of the cycle path in this area. In February 2012, the bridge's trafficability was restricted to a total load of nine tonnes due to the structural damage, and now only six tonnes according to calculations, and special annual inspections are also carried out. Weekly inspections must be carried out until the bridge is closed

Signposting will be provided to divert the cycle path. The diversions will be via a 30 km/h zone in Rosmarinstraße.

The repair or new construction of the bridge is in preparation. Subject to budget discussions in the city council, the civil engineering department is planning to renovate the bridge in 2016.
