Jury selects design for Bernsdorf indoor swimming pool

Invitation to the press conference on 16 March, 2 p.m., Stadtbad Chemnitz

Next Friday, 16 March at 2 p.m., the winning design for the new construction of the competition-ready indoor swimming pool in Bernsdorf with a 25-metre lane will be announced at Chemnitz City Pool. The press conference will be attended by the Mayor of Construction, Michael Stötzer, and other judges.

Representatives of the media are cordially invited to attend.

In accordance with a city council resolution from June 2016, the city is planning to build a new indoor swimming pool suitable for competitions with a 25-metre lane on the grounds of the Bernsdorf outdoor pool. To this end, a planner selection procedure was announced as an interdisciplinary realisation competition with a preliminary, open application procedure for planning offices or consortiums with architects. The aim of the realisation competition is to obtain convincing designs in terms of urban planning, functionality, economy, energy efficiency and architecture. These should also meet the requirements of the German Swimming Association for a competition-standard indoor swimming pool for swimming and water polo.

Of the total of 16 selected participants, 15 submitted corresponding designs, which will now be proposed to the jury. The jury, consisting of nationally active specialist judges, city councillors as expert judges, the Mayor of the Urban Development and Construction Department, heads of offices and departments of the City of Chemnitz and the Disability Officer as an expert, will evaluate the submitted plans according to specific assessment criteria and present the winning design on Friday.

The competition results can be viewed in an exhibition in the foyer of the municipal swimming pool during opening hours from 17 to 23 March.

The new swimming complex at the site of the outdoor pool in Bernsdorf is intended to replace the functions of the Bernsdorf indoor swimming pool, which has since been closed, and thus strengthen the location of the outdoor pool. The construction is to be
75 per cent of the construction is to be funded by the Saxon Investment Strengthening Act, "Saxony" budget, and is expected to begin next year.

The new indoor swimming pool will have a 25-metre swimming pool with six lanes as well as a teaching pool that can also be used by schools for swimming lessons. A small paddling area is planned for families with smaller children. A diving pool is also planned for the new indoor swimming pool in Bernsdorf.

In addition to the municipal swimming pool built in 1935, Chemnitz also has the "Am Südring" indoor swimming pool, which opened in 1992, and the Gablenz indoor pool, which opened in 1984 and is currently undergoing extensive refurbishment.
