Julius Arnfeld - German-Jewish actor and amateur photographer

On Tuesday, 9 November, from 7 to 8.30 pm, the adult education centre invites you to a lecture to commemorate the Reichspogromnacht of 1938 and is dedicated to the life of the German-Jewish actor, director, amateur photographer and author Julius Arnfeld (1875 to 1957).
Admission is free.
As one of Arnfeld's great-grandchildren, Peter Blechschmidt from Chemnitz will make previously unpublished biographical details of his great-grandfather accessible - particularly with regard to Julius Arnfeld's voluntary renunciation of his successful stage career in favour of a reorientation towards animal photography from 1931.
Julius Arnfeld left numerous traces in the 82 years of his life. His work catered to the interests and needs of many people for art and entertainment in imperial Germany and afterwards. However, the bourgeois-conservative cultural man Arnfeld was not thanked for his endeavoured synthesis of being Jewish and German at the same time during the rise of National Socialism. The National Socialists deported him and almost his entire family to the Theresienstadt ghetto. Julius Arnfeld was the only member of the family to survive and saved himself and his fellow sufferers from self-abandonment.
