Joint rescue association with the Erzgebirgskreis district

Yesterday, the city council decided to form a joint rescue association with the Erzgebirgskreis district with the effective date of 1 January 2013. Accordingly, the administration will submit the statutes of the new association to the city council for a decision at the October meeting. The reorganisation of the rescue service areas had become necessary due to the reorganisation of the districts as part of the territorial reform in the Free State of Bavaria in 2008.

An external expert report examined various options for the reorganisation from next year. One variant envisaged the separate responsibility of the city of Chemnitz and the Erzgebirgskreis district for the rescue service, while the other variant envisaged joint operation by both bodies. Among other things, the economic efficiency of the organisation and administration, the quality of the rescue service, the functional capability in the context of major emergency response and possible advantages in the procurement of vehicles and medical technology were examined. As a result, the option whereby the rescue service is operated jointly by the city of Chemnitz and the Erzgebirgskreis district proved to be the more economical and was therefore submitted for a decision.

The district council of the Erzgebirgskreis had already approved the formation of a joint special-purpose association on 21 June 2012.
