Joint lecture evening organised by the town archive and the history society

The next event in the programme of the series "The City Archive presents" is a joint event of the City Archive and the Chemnitz History Society on Thursday, 23 October, 6 pm, in the Volksbank Chemnitz e. G. building, Innere Klosterstraße 15, 09111 Chemnitz. Admission is free.
Please note the following change: Instead of the planned lecture by Britta Günther on Karl Heinrich Wilhelm Schönberg, one of Karl Stülpner's first biographers, which will take place in March 2015, the Saxon regional historian Prof Dr Helmut Bräuer will present his latest book "Empörung im Erzgebirge. Vom Kampf ums Brot in alter Zeit" , published by Tauchaer Verlag.
Helmut Bräuer, director of the Karl-Marx-Stadt city archives from 1971 to 1881, already published similar volumes of historical miniatures in the 1990s with the titles "Gemeyne Leute", "Aufruhr in der Stadt" and "Findelgeschichten", in which he focussed on the Luther period in Saxony and the age of Augustus the Strong.
The city archive will provide information on the lecture: The historical framework is provided by the periodically recurring famines in the Ore Mountains in the 18th century, which led to an attempted uprising by miners in Freiberg in 1720 - in the so-called Augustan Age. Around this event - for the author and speaker the "real historical backdrop" - the author groups twelve historical miniatures in which he depicts the reactions of social groups to the times of famine. In this way, miners and linen weavers, yarn and grain merchants, pastors and bailiffs are presented and their situation described. He also shows that different social locations give rise to different views and attitudes. Bräuer's sympathy undoubtedly belongs to the "common man".
