Johanneum" children's and youth foundation receives donation
Last weekend, the municipal children's and youth foundation "Johanneum" received a donation totalling 13,000 euros. The donor was the Chemnitz Masonic Lodge "Zur Harmonie".
In his words of thanks, Hans-Rudolf Merkel, Chairman of the "Johanneum" Foundation, promised to use the donation responsibly for innovative projects and to use it for socially disadvantaged children and young people in Chemnitz.
About the Johanneum Foundation:
The "Johanneum" Children and Youth Foundation is the first legally independent municipal foundation in Chemnitz. Its history began in 1855, when the private citizen Carl Christian Hübner "provided for the establishment of an educational centre in Chemnitz" in his will. He not only donated 30,000 thalers, but also had the idea for the name, which refers to King John of Saxony.
In 1998, Chemnitz City Council decided to sell the plot of land on Annaberger Straße in Harthau that had been developed with the former "Geschwister Scholl Children's Home" foundation building. The city administration was instructed to prepare the formation of a public foundation for the promotion of public and independent youth welfare in Chemnitz and to allocate the proceeds from the sale totalling DM 645,000 to this foundation.
In 2014, the basic assets of the "Johanneum" Children and Youth Foundation totalled 469,000 euros.
In 2014/2015, the Johanneum Foundation supported the following projects, among others
- Johanneum Academy "Medicine and Health" in cooperation with Bethanien Krankenhaus Chemnitz gGmbH: funding amount 3,500 euros
- Johanneum Academy "Science and Technology" in cooperation with Chemnitz University of Technology: funding amount 3,224 euros
- LOVE.LIFE.REALITY youth project of the Alternative Youth Centre: Funding amount 1,700 euros
