On Friday, 5 December, from 11 a.m., residents of the Rabenstein district are invited to take part in a public planting on Schmuckplatz, Oberfrohnaer Straße (opposite the REWE supermarket).
Eight trees will be planted there in the presence of Andreas Streich, Head of Green Space Maintenance at the City of Chemnitz's Parks and Gardens Department, Forst, which have been selected with climate resilience in mind: four Kobushi magnolias (Magnolia kobus), three Swedish service trees (Sorbus intermedia) and a Colorado fir (Abies concolor).
The planting pits will be prepared by the Parks Department. The necessary tools will be provided.
Unfortunately, the condition of the ornamental square in Rabenstein has not lived up to its name in recent years. For this reason, the Rabenstein citizens' initiative and the Parks Department have jointly planned the redesign in the 2025 Capital of Culture year and are realising it step by step with young gardeners in training and the Parks Department's own staff. Extensive landscaping work was already carried out in spring to restore the Schmuckplatz. The paths were repaired, new benches and litter bins were installed and the central ornamental bed was replanted. The tree planting now completes the project.
Rabenstein is a district with a high proportion of green spaces, which is also characterised by attractive public parks such as the Rabenstein Palace and Castle Park and the Hans-Carl-von-Carlowitz Park. There are also other green spaces whose development is actively supported by the Rabenstein citizens' initiative.
