Invitation: Topping-out ceremony for the new school for the physically disabled and laying of the foundation stone for the new two-court sports hall at André-Gymnasium

There are two important reasons to celebrate in Chemnitz on Thursday, 17 July: the topping-out ceremony for the new building of the Special Education Centre for the Physically Disabled in Chemnitz and the laying of the foundation stone for the construction of a new two-court sports hall at the Dr.-Wilhelm-André-Gymnasium.

Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig and Herbert Wolff, State Secretary at the Saxon State Ministry of Culture, will be attending both events.

Representatives of the media are cordially invited to attend both on-site events on Thursday afternoon. The topping-out ceremony at the new site of the school for the physically disabled on Heinrich-Schütz-Straße begins at 3 p.m., while the laying of the foundation stone for the two-field sports hall at the Dr.-Wilhelm-André-Gymnasium at Henriettenstraße 35 starts at 4 p.m.

The new building for the school for the physically disabled at the Heinrich-Schütz-Straße site on Sonnenberg is the largest school building project undertaken by the city council in Chemnitz and, in addition to the school, includes a two-court sports hall with outdoor facilitiesfacilities, a residential home, all-day care for children and young people with physical and multiple disabilities as well as therapy rooms with a therapy pool and gymnastics room. A total of 32.6 million euros will be invested in the extensive construction project. The Free State is subsidising the construction with a total of 14.8 million euros. The city of Chemnitz itself is investing 17.8 million euros.

The laying of the foundation stone at Dr Wilhelm-André-Gymnasium on Kaßberg includes the construction of a new two-court sports hall with outdoor facilities and the renovation of the gymnasium in the old building. Construction began in September 2013 and is scheduled for completion in July 2015. The total costs amount to approx. 4.26 million euros, of which 2.87 million euros are being provided by the city of Chemnitz and the remainder by subsidies.
