Invitation to a press conference on historic gas lanterns

On Monday, 13 November at 4 pm, Mayor Michael Stötzer is inviting representatives of the media to a press conference in the Schloßchemnitz district due to the great interest in the topic of historic gas lanterns in various parts of the city.
The meeting point is at the junction of Josephinenstraße and Wilhelm-Külz-Platz, where "old" original gas lanterns can be viewed and discussed in direct comparison with "new" ones.
Background information:
Approximately one third of the remaining 320 historic, listed gas lamps are to be replaced by replicas. This was closely coordinated in advance with the monument protection authorities of the Free State of Saxony and the City of Chemnitz, eins/inetz and the City of Chemnitz Traffic and Civil Engineering Department.
The gas lanterns are to be replaced between 2023 and 2025, taking into account economic efficiency as well as climatic and structural specifications in line with the requirements for listed buildings. Historic-looking and visually equivalent candelabra in the style of gas lanterns, but operated with LED lights, will be used.
There are economic reasons in particular for switching from gas to LED. For example, a real gas luminaire has an energy consumption of 1,000 watts, whereas a comparable electric luminaire only has 30 watts. But the negative environmental aspects are also considerable. For example, 95 per cent of the gas used in the historic lanterns is converted into waste heat.
