Invitation to a photo session: Indonesian school class visits Chemnitz
Mayor Miko Runkel welcomes the pupils to the town hall
On Tuesday, 8 September 2015, a delegation of pupils and teachers from Padang, Indonesia, visited Chemnitz City Hall. Mayor Miko Runkel welcomes the guests at 12.30 pm in the city council chamber and presents the headmistress of the Indonesian school with the Chemnitz Roland as a gift. She then passes this gift on to the district administration in Sumatra, Indonesia.
The school in Padang is a partner school of Dr Wilhelm André Gymnasium. The student exchange programme started in 2014 and this is the second visit by Indonesian students to Chemnitz. The students from Chemnitz were welcomed by the Governor of Sumatra (comparable to the Prime Minister) during their return visit to Indonesia in 2014.
Padang is a harbour city on the island of Sumatra and has a population of around 820,000. The most important economic sector is exports via the large harbour. In 2009, the city suffered severe damage due to a major earthquake that claimed around 1100 lives.
The city is also famous for its "Padang cuisine", which is very spicy and where it is customary for guests to choose from all the dishes on offer and only pay for what they have eaten at the end.
