Invitation: "Long Day of Urban Nature" in Glösa Forest

15th GEO Biodiversity Day 2013 on Saturday, 1 June with excursions

The Chemnitz Environmental Centre is organising the "Long Day of Urban Nature" on Saturday, 1 June in the Am Glösaer Wald area as the 15th GEO Biodiversity Day. The meeting point is the Kinderwaldstätte railway station. Chemnitz nature lovers, young and old, families, children, schoolchildren and teachers as well as the curious are cordially invited to take part. Various excursions will be offered throughout the day under expert guidance - please refer to the flyer for detailed information on the programme from 6 am to 9 pm .

The study area is located in the Ebersdorfer Feldflur on the Chemnitz - Riesa railway line and includes near-natural, stream-side wetland forests and small meadow valleys. Two areas have been designated as natural monuments: the FND "Quelltäler der Ebersdorfer Gründe" and the FND "Feuchtwiesen am Indianerteich".

The "Long Days of Urban Nature" are supported by NABU/Regional Association of the Ore Mountains and the Nature Conservation Youth (NAJU), the Chemnitz Mushroom Friends Association and the Arctic-Alpine Garden, the Walter Meusel Foundation and the Saxon State Foundation for Nature and the Environment with the "Planaria" environmental mobile.

Background: GEO Biodiversity Day is an initiative launched by GEO magazine in 1999. Every year, over 20,000 people in many different places in Germany, Austria and Switzerland take part in the campaign. The idea of GEO Day is to identify as many animals and plants as possible in a limited area within 24 hours in order to show that there is diversity to be discovered on your own doorstep. The aim is not to break records. The experiences count more than the results. The aim is to sharpen our awareness of the richness of species in our own environment and to discover the fascinating life forms that are hidden nearby.
