Planning for new school, daycare centre and indoor swimming pool building
At its meeting yesterday, the city council decided to implement an extensive refurbishment and new construction programme. According to the Saxon Investment Strengthening Act ("Saxony" budget), the city has 47.5 million euros in funding available over the next five years, which will be supplemented by the city's own funds totalling 15.85 million euros. The money can be used to realise numerous measures that were previously postponed due to a lack of funding programmes or insufficient own funds.
According to plans, the funding will be invested in five different areas of the city's infrastructure. With an investment of 20 million euros, the focus is on the construction of a new secondary school. According to the city council resolution of 13 April 2016, this will be built at the Richard-Hartmann-Platz site. By subsidising the project in the "Saxony" budget, the City of Chemnitz's own funds for the new building can be significantly reduced. The plans also include the construction of a new daycare centre with 150 places in the city centre for €5 million.
The sports sector will also be subsidised. Investments totalling 13.1 million euros have been approved for the construction of a new swimming complex. A 25-metre hall with an outdoor area is planned.
12 million will be used to implement the theatre concept. The plan here is to optimise the location by moving the rehearsal stages and the warehouse to the city centre.
In addition, investments totalling 13.3 million euros have been approved for road and bridge construction. Of this, EUR 10 million is earmarked for the redesign of Theaterstrasse and Brückenstrasse to open up the future city centre ring road. 2.4 million euros are planned for the repair of the Karl-Schmidt-Rottluff Bridge (Kaßberg slip road). The access road to Neefepark/Brücke Neefestraße is also to be remodelled for 900,000 euros.
