Introducing the City of Chemnitz's new literature scholarship holder
Stefan Hornbach prevails against 40 applications - Moderated discussion with reading on 11 April, 7 pm, Neue Sächsische Galerie at TIETZ
Stefan Hornbach is the new literature fellow of the city of Chemnitz. He beat 40 other applications from Germany, Austria and Switzerland and will live and work in Chemnitz from the beginning of April until the end of September.
On Thursday, 11 April at 7 pm in the Neue Sächsische Galerie in the TIETZ, Chemnitz residents will have the opportunity to get to know Stefan Hornbach better. He will read from his debut novel "Den Hund überleben" (Surviving the Dog) and give insights into his work and his plans for the literature scholarship in Chemnitz in a moderated discussion.
Representatives of the media are also invited to attend.
The literary scholarship, which was first advertised by the City of Chemnitz's cultural department in 2022, was looking for a literary producer who would spend six months exploring the city and region in a multifaceted way, participating in the socio-political and cultural discourse and enriching it with their own contributions. The scholarship is remunerated with 1,500 euros per month, the sponsor receives a furnished flat and a public transport season ticket for the six months.
The first literature scholarship was awarded to the Berlin author Arna Aley. During her six-month stay, she invited Chemnitz residents to tell her stories during regular consultation hours at the Stefan Heym Forum. In addition to the opening and closing events for the scholarship at the Neue Sächsische Galerie, she presented her performance project at the Tankstelle project space and was very actively involved in Chemnitz's cultural landscape. This year, Arna Aley is in charge of the writing workshop "Greif zur Feder, Chemnitz" of the Chemnitz Opera's Capital of Culture project "Rummelplatz".
The six-member jury, which selected Stefan Hornbach from the 41 entries at the beginning of the year, consisted of
Arna Aley (author & 1st literary scholarship holder of the City of Chemnitz), Prof. Ulrike Brummert, docteur d'Etat (cultural scientist, TU & Cultural Advisory Board Chemnitz), Dr. Lutz Graner (literary scholar at the University of Bielefeld & owner of Chemnitzer Eichenspinner Verlag), Marcus Heinke (project manager for culture at Netzwerk für Kultur- und Jugendarbeit Chemnitz), Stefanie Menschner (spoken word artist and poetry slammer) and Katharina von Storch (Chairwoman of Zieten e. V., co-founder of the Späti & RABBAZ magazine).
Personal details:
Stefan Hornbach, born in 1986 in Speyer, studied theatre studies, psychology and modern German literature in Munich, acting at the Akademie für Darstellende Kunst Baden-Württemberg in Ludwigsburg and literary writing at the Deutsches Literaturinstitut Leipzig. He won the Osnabrück Playwright's Prize with his play "Over My Dead Body", which was followed by invitations to the Heidelberg Stückemarkt playwriting competition and the Autorentheatertage at the Deutsches Theater Berlin, as well as translations into four languages and a radio play production.
"Den Hund überleben" (Hanser, 2021) is his debut novel, for which he was awarded the Jürgen Ponto Foundation Literature Prize. The book is about a young man who moves back in with his parents due to his cancer and encounters not only old school friends but also love back in his hometown. (Source: Hanser Literaturverlage)
