International Women's Day 2024
Equal Opportunities Officer: Exhibition opening on 8 March, 6 pm, and workshop on 9 March, from 10 am to 1 pm, Lila Villa Women's Centre
On Friday, 8 March at 6 pm, the exhibition "Remembrance - Survival - Resistance - Peace" will open at the Lila Villa Women's Centre (with invited guests) to mark International Women's Day. In co-operation with the Women's Museum Fürth and the local association "Women in One World", textile art from Asia, Europe, Africa and South America will be on display, telling of the art of survival in different countries.
Prof. Dr Gabriele Franger, who has been collecting textile artworks for decades and has extensive knowledge of the lives of women in the individual countries, will give a vivid account of the connection between art and social action.
Representatives of the media are cordially invited to attend.
The objects document social structures in which women are disadvantaged. They tell of violent conflicts, war, hardship and flight, but also of hope and solidarity between women and of everyday life, which is often very different from ours. The exhibition honours all the women who have survived or are surviving under changing political, economic and social conditions.
The exhibition can be viewed at the Lila Villa Women's Centre until the end of May.
On Saturday, 9 March, from 10 am to 1 pm, Gabriele Franger will lead a workshop entitled "Women's history(ies) in a political context" at the Lila Villa Women's Centre. Embroideries by Afghan women can be sewn onto your own textiles. More significant, however, are the reports on a solidarity embroidery project in Afghanistan. In the workshop, cultural knowledge and encounters in solidarity will be imparted, the threads of one's own reality of life will be linked with the "strangers" and thus peace work will be carried out. We have been in contact with the Fürth Women's Museum since April 2022. At the "30 years of Frauenbrücke Ost - West" celebrations, an initial plan was made to develop something together on the topic of textiles, as Chemnitz used to be a stronghold of the textile industry. During a visit to Fürth last year, "nails were made with heads". This is how the idea for an exhibition in Chemnitz took shape, which is now opening at the Lila Villa women's centre.
