Bertolt Brecht wrote the play "Refugee Conversations" in exile, which addressed the problems of emigrants who were expelled from Germany from 1933 onwards and the state of Germany. The title was adopted by Inge and Stefan Heym for a dense text that emerged from conversations with exiles from the GDR in 1989. Their motives are as varied and multifaceted as the GDR itself was and was perceived. Inge and Stefan Heym visited them in the reception camp for GDR refugees in Giessen on 29 and 30 September 1989. 35 years later, these texts are also a document about the conditions in the late GDR, just a few weeks before its end, which no-one seriously thought about at the time.
Excerpts from these conversations will be presented in a staged reading.
