The emergence of the GDR: answers and new questions

What was the GDR? The attempt to answer this question is based on the assumption that the GDR would not have existed without the Soviet Union. Nevertheless, the GDR was more than a Soviet crown colony. It was created on an anti-fascist mission, but offered little room for manoeuvre for an anti-fascist, socialist democracy. It invoked Marxism for some reasons and yet falsified essential basic principles of Marx and Engels, Liebknecht and Luxemburg. The emergence of the GDR is placed in a historical perspective that also poses new questions for those born later.
Prof. Dr Mario Keßler (born 1955) is a Senior Fellow at the Leibnitz Centre for Contemporary History in Potsdam. He lived and taught in the USA for several years.
