This year's international Safer Internet Day (SID) will take place on Tuesday, 11 February. Action days are planned in Chemnitz on 11 and 12 February. This year's focus is: "No likes for lies! Recognise extremism, populism and deepfakes online".
Educational staff, parents and children will learn all about the internet and new media at workshops and information events. The campaign days are also intended to provide general information about the opportunities and risks of social media. To this end, the programme has been expanded to address different target groups. Registration takes place locally with the respective organiser. Most of the events are free of charge. The programme can be found in the attached flyer, and further offers for schools, including Saxony-wide offers, are available at www.mesax.de/sid.
The background to this topic is that disinformation and hateful online content on social networks is on the rise. Children and young people have no experience of dealing with global crises, political developments and conspiracy narratives. Young people in particular are therefore at risk of following manipulative social media content and spreading extreme content uncritically.
The campaign week is a joint event organised by the State Office for Schools and Education, Chemnitz City Library, Chemnitz Police Headquarters, media educator Sebastian Steger, the Wildwasser e. V. association, the Crime Prevention Council of the City of Chemnitz (KPR), the Saxony Consumer Advice Centre, the City of Chemnitz Children and Youth Commissioner and the "Prevention in a Team" network. Solaris FZU gGmbH Sachsen is also involved.
