International Day against Violence against Women

CANCELLED: Lecture and exhibition on the topic of femicide on 25 November from 10 a.m. in Open Space

Attention: The event is cancelled due to the Saxon Corona Emergency Ordinance. (as of 22 November 2021)

On Thursday, 25 November, from 10 a.m., the Equal Opportunities Officer of the City of Chemnitz and the Frauenhilfe Chemnitz e.V. association invite you to a joint event in the Open Space behind the Karl-Marx-Kopf (Brückenstraße 10). The occasion is the International Day against Violence against Women. The topic of the event is femicide. This refers to the killing of women and girls because of their gender. Representatives of the media are cordially invited.

Susanne Köhler, lawyer and chairwoman of the Frauenrat Sachsen e. V., has been invited to speak on the subject of femicide. The lecture starts at 11 am in the Open Space. Afterwards there will be room for questions and discussion. A small exhibition of the protagonists, which can be viewed on the day from 10 am to 5 pm, is intended to raise awareness of the topic and provide information about help options.

Unfortunately, violence against women is still omnipresent. According to the EU Commission, one in three women in Europe experience physical or sexualised violence at least once in their lives. "But regardless of whether it's sexual assault in the workplace, female genital mutilation, crimes committed in the name of so-called honour, trafficking in women, prostitution, early and forced marriage or domestic violence - all violence against women must be combated and outlawed," says Equal Opportunities Officer Pia Hamann.

Background:

In Germany, 215 men became murderers this year (as of 21 September). They killed 103 women and 20 children, 13 of whom were girls. In 92 cases it was only an attempt (source: victim reports BKA/One Million Rising). Although around five times as many men as women are murdered worldwide every year, two thirds of the victims of homicides in close social proximity are women.

Women who are affected or threatened by violence can call the nationwide "Violence against women" helpline around the clock. The hotline offers counselling for victims and their social environment in 18 languages. The number is: 08000 116 016.

In Chemnitz, the intervention and coordination centre for combating domestic violence can be contacted on 0371 9185354 or by email at info(at)ikos-chemnitz.de.
